I did not watch the debate last night. I watched a silent Harold Lloyd short and finished a book. But, I did flip through at the end and noticed She Who Will Not Be Named was saying something about "...so we can sleep safely in our beds."
I don't know what she had said before that. I hope that she wasn't saying that a McCain presidency would make our nation safe. No earthly presence can make any of us safe, as much as we would like to think so. And exactly what is safety, anyway? Is it the expectation that we will not be hurt by anything at anytime? People who want that as a guarantee are deluded. And people who want to guarantee that as a condition of their election to office don't need to be elected.
Look at how much freedom we've lost in the name of safety. We are much more a totalitarian state than we were before 9/11. There are those who would make it much more so.
I think the question of safety is the wrong question. I think we should be asking about hope. In all of this talk about safety, hope is scarce because fear reigns. Fear is not of God. My hope is in the Lord, the maker of Heaven and Earth.
Just my two cents' about safety. That said, we should have a strong national defense. However, we need to remember who we are as a nation. That nation does not go off willy nilly and start wars in distant countries just because it can and said it was done in the name of our safety.
Today is our tenth anniversary. We are going a bit south to a little resort town for the night. I used to have a bunch of scanned wedding photos but they are on the elderly PC I no longer can access; I'll scan a few and post tomorrow when we get back! We really had a lovely wedding and the photos make the both of us smile.
