From Something Within

I read Renita Weems in seminary. I have started reading her blog, which is very good. Here is the latest entry.

Meanwhile, I got home yesterday afternoon and the very first thing we noted is that our new satellite dish receiver, installed 3 days prior to our trip, no longer works. Oh well. We have Netflix and other things--like books! Plus I have an entire month's worth of mail to scour. We are assured another one will be sent soon. I am going to an inaugural party on Tuesday so that is not a concern.

And another thing. Please pray for a retired priest of our parish; his foot had to be amputated this past week. This is not the first foot amputation in our church lately. As our rector said, "...foot amputations are not contagious!"

More later!

And we're off

In two hours I will be on the road back to South Dakota. It is a two day drive, so I won't be here or on Facebook much, if any. There are a few odds and ends to do to close up the rental house besides the normal get ready for the day things, check out with the property manager, and off we go.

With apologies to my South Dakota readers, I really wish I could stay. Missouri is the place I consider home. I have thoroughly enjoyed this month here. More reflections to come!

In Missouri

I am at last in our short term rental house in Missouri. We got here Wed afternoon. Between not hearing a thing from my brother after I made the last post, and blizzard warnings, Taciturn and I decided to just go when we had a window. So we left Tuesday, although we both were starting to feel the stirrings of colds (which made us forget many items we'd planned to bring). Easy drive, no problems (except the drunks having a loudly profane argument all night in the next room at the motel).

There were a few things that weren't quite as expected at the rental, though. I've spent a good bit of the time since we've been in town trying to get those taken care of, and it seems that by noon tomorrow, all should be well.

My shadow side came out yesterday totally unbidden, and I owe my DIL an apology. I'm hoping I said what I said because I was tired. I had dropped by to say a quick hi to Only Son's family. When I was preparing to leave, GD asked why wasn't I coming back for supper. I said, "Because I wasn't invited." Which wasn't the case at all--the weather forecast predicted an ice storm. Why I said what I did I haven't a clue. I quickly corrected myself and told her because of the coming ice storm it didn't seem like we should drive that evening. Anyway, they are coming over here a bit later on. I plan to ply them with Imo's Pizza and have a nice evening.

Tomorrow we may go to see my parents. There is a new baby in that house though, my new great nephew JME, and since we have colds that may not do. Maybe we can just view the baby from afar!

Continuing to wait...

Advent's theme of waiting is sure my theme at present. Besides waiting for the birth of the Christ Child, I'm awaiting news on what happens next with my brother, and to see what happens to the weather here.

My brother RCE is going to have an angiogram of some sort next week. Last I heard, his doctor is looking to do a CT angiogram, which is a new test that although is non invasive, many times does not give the appropriate info. Don't know if RCE pushed back when a regular angiogram was suggested, or if the cardiologist thought that RCE's coronary arteries are so likely to be clean that he didn't need to be invasive. We appreciate all of the prayers said on his behalf.

I had hoped to go be with him but a blizzard (yet another!) is blowing in tonight with a huge drop in temperatures. The high tomorrow is projected to be -4. The snow has started but the wind has not. The temp is beginning to drop, though. Anyway, this certainly would cancel any trip we would take to Denver to see RCE. It may delay our trip to Missouri also, by a day or two. We have to juggle not only getting through South Dakota, but into Missouri where storms are headed around the time we project to get there!

My daughter in law is happy I'm coming and would be sad if I didn't show, or was late. GD has FIVE cavities and is having extensive dental work done, and DIL needs a babysitter for GSs #1 and #2 while she takes GD to the pediatric dentist. Happy to do it if I'm there.

Speaking of pediatric dentists, I am amazed by what GD told me of her visit to him. She adores him. She waxed rhapsodic about all he did for her, especially the cleaning of her teeth. She thought he did her a huge favor. I don't know what they gave her, but it sure worked. She confided that her brother GS #1 also has a cavity, and that he would be too scared to go to the dentist. She herself is kind of a "fraidy cat" and that was why I was surprised that she said she liked him.

It's snowing...

Busy week and limbo news

My goodness, it has been a week since I posted last.

It has been busy with work and some other stuff. Today will be busy also. We are in the big push before we leave for our Missouri trip, with arranging for a housesitter, making sure all is ready at the other end, etc.

And then there are the reminders that despite all of our best plans, things can go awry. My Denver based brother RCE, who is looking for a new job, called last night to ask if he should go to the cardiologist appt that was set up for him or should he ignore it. The history of this is in his current job, he is required to have a complete physical exam every five years. He just turned 45, so he had the requisite exam. His electrocardiogram could have been better, so he went for a stress test--and flunked it miserably by what he described to me. Therefore he is going for further testing today, but wondered if it was just overkill.

"YES!" I told him. "You must go for the test today. What you described is not good." What he had were ominous changes in his exercise EKG that went away with rest. And RCE is in good shape--he runs five miles most days of the week and practices yoga and tai chi. He has a regular practice of Buddhist meditation. He does not smoke. He does take medicine for high blood pressure and for high cholesterol, which seems to be our family heritage (all of my brothers take those medications and I have my own issues). Grumble.

The first thing out of Taciturn's mouth was, "He won't be able to get a new job now!" RCE really needs a new job as the current one, which is well paying, is also very stressful (which is why he took up meditation).

Please pray for RCE. This is the same brother I took care of in the spring when he developed a septic elbow. Taciturn already has suggested that we might alter our travel plans as RCE may need us to take care of him, should he need further procedures. I'll wait until there is further information.

On the road

After a very emotionally intense week at the Hospice House and a horrible meeting Sunday morning at my church, I'm on the way to Missouri to visit my dad on his birthday, as well as Only Son and his family.

This is a really good week to be away. If I was still in town, today I would be stomping into the rector's office and resigning my vestry position, my LEM position, my committee positions, and my church membership (or maybe not, but it would be tempting). Distance lends perspective, and a chance to really pray this through. The above still could happen, but it would be more considered and prayerful. I spent over a half hour on the phone last evening checking out perceptions with my friend who is a spiritual director and good at picking up the undertow on things. She attended the same meeting--I just wanted to make sure that I was not blowing stuff out of proportion and letting ego get into the way. She actually feels exactly the same as I do.

When I feel angry and disappointed, I do not send email. I tend to say things I want to grab out of the air and take back!

I spent last night at a Comfort Inn in Sioux City, IA. I'll hit Only Son's house mid afternoon sometime. I'll probably just lurk on my fave blogs this week instead of post. Never enough time with the grandchildren!

In the Air

I miss my pals at what Mibi calls Big Old Seminary. Many of them are going to scatter in 6 or 7 weeks to the Four Winds, so I'm headed on Northwest Airlines to DCA tomorrow morning, fairly early, so I can get to Our Nation's Capital prior to Rush Hour (more like Rush Half a Day, but I digress). I want to see Mibi, Beth O'C, AMH, and several others especially.

I found out today that my pal BB's baby shower will be held while I'm there, and I'm invited!!! I'm thrilled beyond words. I really like BB and am honored to share this special event with her. Besides, I bet lots of my pals will be at the shower, so I'll get to see many folks.

HOWEVER, I'm a tad nervous about two things. One, several airlines have grounded huge chunks of their schedules for inspections. I hope NWA doesn't do that, but my calendar is fairly free in case it happens, so it wouldn't be the worst thing. Two, we have a heavy snow warning for tonight, and I live near the top of a four mile high canyon. I have AWD and really good tires, but still the idea of driving to the airport in 6 inches of snow down a very long hill gives me pause. We'll see how things are in the morning.

Gotta run and continue to prepare for this trip!

Trip, and moving

Had a whirlwind trip over the weekend for Granddaughter's ballet recital. Flew out on Friday, saw rehearsals and the recital on Saturday, flew back on Sunday. The kids were astonished Saturday morning to find I was leaving the very next day! Grandson #1 was adamant that I not leave until I reassured him I'd come back, then he thought it would be ok if I left. Here is a Father's Day photo of Only Son and his family, sans GS#1 (who would not join the picture):

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, we are running around getting ready for packers. I have all kinds of ideas for meditations based on things that I heard over the weekend, but I can't make myself write until the packing is done. I'm weird that way.

My Internet access will be spotty also for a while. My totally wired house will cease to be that as of tomorrow, and won't be that way again probably for another month. But I do know places I can go to blog!
