Sleepytime

Forgive me, but I have a weird work schedule this week.

I wanted more hours, and got them. I work three 11 pm to 7 am shifts this week--each two days (or nights?) apart. Last night was the first of them. It wasn't too bad of a night until an hour before I was supposed to leave, then it got really busy. I didn't get to bed this morning until 9:30.

So, of course, I slept right through my alarm. This afternoon at one I was to attend an important meeting at church vital to my lay Eucharistic visitor re-training (I performed that ministry when I lived here before, and feel called to resume it). I woke up when it was half over. When I figured in dressing and travel time, it didn't make sense to go for the rest.

Most people are not summoned to meetings at 1 in the morning. When I explain it in those terms to our deacon, maybe I'll get a pass.

Changing the subject...I read Dick Cavett on the NY Times website. He has a wicked humor and is spot on in his observations. Take, for example, this observation about the liberties taken by Sarah Palin with the English language:

Could the willingness to crown one who seems to have no first language (italics mine) have anything to do with the oft-lamented fact that we seem to be alone among nations in having made the word “intellectual” an insult?

Ouch. He nailed it, you betcha.
